Just one thing: How are your soft skills?
If the person who has the power to hire you takes you to dinner, do you know how to make small talk without causing offense? Has anyone ever taught you which fork goes with which course at a formal dinner? Did anyone ever tell you to avoid at all costs the cherry tomatoes on your salad?
Because really, if you try to cut into one of those little round fruits, it will not go well.
These were just a few of the lessons Katie Steuer of Virginia Tech Career Services emphasized to the 170 students in this year’s Fine Dining 101 class held on campus Wednesday night at Owens Banquet Room.
“We just want students to come away learning one new thing,” Steuer said. “And we want them to feel a little more prepared.”
