Psychohistory<\/span><\/h1>\n

Psychohistory is a new, developing \u00a0 science in\u00a0<\/span>Isaac Asimov<\/a><\/span>‘s<\/span>Foundation<\/a><\/span>\u00a0universe which combines\u00a0<\/span>history<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>sociology<\/a><\/span>, and<\/span>mathematical statistics<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to make general predictions about the future behavior of very large groups of people, such as the<\/span>Galactic Empire<\/a><\/span>. It was first introduced in the five short stories (1942?1944) which would later be collected as the 1951 novel<\/span>Foundation<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Axioms<\/span><\/h2>\n

Psychohistory depends on the idea that, while one cannot foresee the actions of a particular individual, the\u00a0<\/span>laws of statistics<\/a><\/span>\u00a0as applied to large groups of people could predict the general flow of future events.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asimov used the analogy of a\u00a0<\/span>gas<\/a><\/span>: an observer has great difficulty in predicting the motion of a single molecule in a gas, but can predict the\u00a0<\/span>mass action<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of the gas to a high level of accuracy. (<\/span>Physicists<\/a><\/span>\u00a0know this as the\u00a0<\/span>Kinetic theory<\/a><\/span>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Asimov applied this concept to the population of his fictional Galactic Empire. The character responsible for the science’s creation,\u00a0<\/span>Hari Seldon<\/a><\/span>, established two\u00a0<\/span>axioms<\/a><\/span>:<\/span><\/p>\n
